Case Details

An overseas HVAC equipment producer needed galvanized steel coils for a new ventilation product program. The material would be used to make air ducts, equipment housings, support parts, and connection sections.

However, the project involved several coil widths and thicknesses. The buyer also needed stable zinc-coated surfaces, controlled dimensions, clear coil identification, and export packing suitable for sea transport.

Zhongersheng Steel prepared a coordinated supply solution based on the buyer’s production equipment and material list. The plan covered material selection, coil specifications, width control, inspection, packaging, and shipment organization.

Customer and Project Background

The customer produces ventilation and air-handling components for commercial buildings and industrial facilities. Its factory uses automated coil-feeding, cutting, forming, and bending equipment.

The new purchasing program required galvanized steel for:

  • Rectangular ventilation ducts
  • Round duct components
  • Equipment covers
  • Air-handling unit panels
  • Mounting brackets
  • Connection flanges
  • Internal support parts
  • Protective housings

Since each production line handled different component sizes, one standard coil width could not meet every requirement.

The customer wanted to reduce local material preparation and improve feeding stability on its forming equipment.

The Main Galvanized Steel Procurement Challenges

The project had three main challenges: material consistency, coil compatibility, and shipment organization.

First, thickness variation could affect forming and assembly. If the material was too thin in some areas, the finished duct might not provide the expected stiffness. If it was too thick, it could increase forming pressure and component weight.

Second, the coils had to match the customer’s production lines. Coil width, inner diameter, outer diameter, and weight could influence feeding and handling.

Finally, several specifications had to be delivered together. Without clear labels, the customer’s warehouse could confuse similar-looking coils.

Therefore, the order required a detailed specification and packaging plan.

Why Galvanized Steel Coil Was Selected

Galvanized steel has a zinc-coated surface that helps protect the base steel from corrosion. It is commonly used for HVAC ducts, ventilation systems, building components, cabinets, and light industrial products.

For this project, galvanized steel provided several practical benefits:

  • Corrosion protection for indoor service
  • Good forming performance
  • Compatibility with duct production
  • Suitable strength for housings and supports
  • Efficient supply in coil form
  • Easy integration with automated equipment

The customer reviewed the installation environment before confirming the material. Components used indoors had different exposure conditions from parts installed on rooftops or in high-humidity areas.

As a result, material selection was linked to the actual use of each product group.

Matching Coil Specifications to Production Equipment

Coil compatibility was an important part of the supply plan. The purchasing team provided information about its decoilers and forming machines.

The confirmed specifications included:

  • Steel thickness
  • Coil width
  • Inner diameter
  • Maximum coil weight
  • Surface condition
  • Zinc coating requirement
  • Dimensional tolerance
  • Required quantity

The coil weight had to remain within the capacity of the customer’s handling equipment. At the same time, the selected width needed to support efficient cutting and forming.

Matching the material to the production line helped reduce feeding issues and unnecessary setup changes.

Custom Slit Galvanized Steel Coils

Some HVAC components required narrower material than the standard master coil. Therefore, selected coils were prepared in widths that better matched the customer’s product sizes.

Custom-width coils can help manufacturers reduce local slitting work and material waste. They may also simplify production planning when the same part is made in large batches.

However, the buyer must clearly define:

  • Final slit width
  • Width tolerance
  • Coil weight
  • Edge condition
  • Number of coils
  • Winding requirements
  • Application of each width

Edge quality was especially important because damaged or uneven edges could affect automated feeding and forming.

The specifications were organized by product code so that each slit width could be linked to the correct production line.

Thickness and Width Control

HVAC components often rely on repeatable bending, locking, and joining. Therefore, consistent material dimensions are essential.

The inspection plan included checks for:

  • Coil thickness
  • Coil width
  • Surface condition
  • Edge quality
  • Coil shape
  • Winding condition
  • Product quantity
  • Package markings

Thickness control helped support stable forming. Meanwhile, width control reduced the risk of alignment problems in coil-fed equipment.

The customer’s purchase documents also stated the permitted tolerances. This provided a clear basis for production and receiving inspection.

Zinc-Coated Surface Inspection

The zinc-coated surface needed to remain clean and consistent. Visible damage, moisture exposure, or poor handling could affect the appearance and protection of the material.

Before packing, the coils were reviewed for surface defects, edge damage, and signs of poor winding.

The customer also received practical guidance for storage. Galvanized coils should be kept in a clean and dry location. In addition, moisture should not remain trapped between layers because it may cause surface staining.

Good warehouse practices help maintain material condition before the coils enter production.

Coil Identification and Traceability

Because the shipment included several similar specifications, identification was critical.

Each coil was assigned a clear reference that matched the customer’s purchasing list. Labels included key information such as:

  • Material type
  • Thickness
  • Width
  • Coil weight
  • Product code
  • Package number
  • Purchase order reference

This system helped the warehouse team separate the coils after delivery. It also allowed production staff to confirm the correct material before loading it onto a line.

For repeat orders, the same coding method could be reused to reduce communication time.

Export Packaging and Shipment Planning

Steel coils are heavy and can move during transport if they are not supported correctly. Their edges and coated surfaces can also be damaged during handling.

The packaging plan therefore considered:

  • Coil orientation
  • Stable base support
  • Moisture protection
  • Edge protection
  • Lifting method
  • Package weight
  • Container loading
  • Unloading conditions

Coils were secured to limit movement during sea transport. Clear package labels remained visible so that the customer could identify each product without removing all protective materials.

The shipment plan also considered the customer’s forklift and coil-handling capacity.

Project Outcome

The coordinated supply plan allowed the customer to receive several galvanized steel coil specifications through one order channel.

Custom-width material reduced part of the local preparation work. In addition, consistent labels made warehouse sorting and production planning more efficient.

The project delivered several operational benefits:

  • Coil dimensions matched the customer’s equipment
  • Custom widths supported different HVAC components
  • Clear tolerances improved purchasing control
  • Coil labels simplified receiving and storage
  • Suitable packaging protected the material in transit
  • A repeatable specification supported later orders

Most importantly, the material plan connected procurement requirements with actual factory operations.
