Case Details

Coastal construction creates difficult material conditions. Salt in the air, high humidity, rain, and strong sunlight can all affect exposed metal parts. Therefore, a contractor working on an outdoor commercial project needed stainless steel tubes with suitable corrosion resistance, stable dimensions, and a consistent decorative surface.

The project included handrails, protective barriers, support frames, and visible architectural details. Since many parts would remain exposed after installation, both performance and appearance were important.

Zhongersheng Steel developed a stainless steel tube supply solution around the project drawings, fabrication process, inspection needs, and sea transport conditions. The plan covered grade selection, dimensional control, surface requirements, product identification, and export packaging.

Customer and Project Background

The customer was an overseas metal fabricator serving commercial construction projects. Its team was preparing stainless steel components for a building located near the coast.

The material would be cut, welded, polished, and assembled at the customer’s facility. Therefore, the tubes had to arrive in a condition suitable for efficient fabrication.

The purchasing requirements included:

  • Stainless steel tubes for outdoor use
  • Round and square tube specifications
  • Controlled wall thickness
  • Stable outside dimensions
  • Consistent brushed surfaces
  • Clear material identification
  • Protection against scratches
  • Packaging suitable for sea freight

The customer also wanted to reduce sorting time after receiving the shipment.

The Coastal Corrosion Challenge

Outdoor steel near the coast faces more than normal rain exposure. Airborne salt can settle on the metal surface and hold moisture. Over time, unsuitable materials or poor surface conditions may show staining or local corrosion.

The customer initially focused on the appearance of the tubes. However, the project review also considered the material grade, exposure level, cleaning plan, welding process, and surface finish.

For visible exterior components, selecting a decorative finish alone was not enough. The base material also had to suit the working environment.

As a result, the purchasing plan gave equal attention to corrosion resistance, fabrication needs, and final appearance.

Selecting 316 Stainless Steel Tube

AISI 316 stainless steel was selected for key exposed parts because it offers better resistance in chloride-rich environments than common general-purpose grades.

The material was suitable for handrails, frames, barriers, and other components exposed to humid coastal air. At the same time, it could support the customer’s cutting, welding, and finishing processes.

Not every part automatically required the same material. Therefore, the customer reviewed where each tube would be installed and whether it would be directly exposed to weather.

This application-based approach helped align material selection with the actual project conditions.

Architectural Tube Dimensions and Tolerances

Dimensional control was important because the tubes had to fit into prefabricated assemblies. Large variations in outside dimensions, wall thickness, or straightness could create gaps during welding and installation.

The order documents therefore defined:

  • Tube shape
  • Outside diameter or side dimensions
  • Wall thickness
  • Cut length
  • Dimensional tolerance
  • Straightness requirements
  • Surface direction
  • Quantity per specification

Round tubes were planned for rail sections, while square tubes supported frames and connection structures.

Before the order moved forward, the specifications were checked against the customer’s drawings and fabrication methods.

Brushed Stainless Steel Tube Surface Requirements

The project used visible stainless steel components. Therefore, the surface had to look consistent across different production batches and tube sizes.

A brushed finish was selected for the main architectural sections. The finish helped provide a clean commercial appearance while making minor handling marks less visible than on highly reflective surfaces.

However, the direction and consistency of the surface grain still needed control. If adjacent components had different grain patterns, the installed structure could appear uneven.

The customer therefore confirmed the surface sample and stated which sides of the square tubes would remain visible after installation.

Quality Checks Before Shipment

The inspection plan focused on the requirements that could affect fabrication and final installation.

Key checks included:

  • Material grade identification
  • Outside tube dimensions
  • Wall thickness
  • Tube length
  • Straightness
  • Surface consistency
  • Visible dents and scratches
  • Product quantity
  • Package markings

Wall thickness was checked because it affected welding, strength, and component weight. In addition, tube dimensions were reviewed to support better fitting during assembly.

The products were separated by shape and size. Each bundle was then marked to match the customer’s material list.

Surface Protection During Export Packing

Architectural stainless steel requires careful handling. A tube can meet the technical specification but still become unsuitable for a visible project if its surface is scratched during loading or transport.

For this reason, the packaging plan reduced direct contact between finished surfaces. Protective materials were used where needed, and the bundles were secured to limit movement.

The packing process also considered:

  • Moisture exposure during sea transport
  • Edge and end protection
  • Bundle stability
  • Forklift handling
  • Warehouse unloading
  • Product identification

Clear labels showed the material grade, tube size, quantity, and package number. Therefore, the customer could check and sort the shipment more efficiently after arrival.

Fabrication and Installation Support

The tubes were supplied according to the confirmed project list so the fabricator could organize cutting and welding by installation area.

Consistent dimensions helped the workshop prepare repeat components with fewer fitting adjustments. Meanwhile, clear bundle labels allowed the production team to locate each specification without opening every package.

The customer’s fabrication team was also advised to protect the stainless steel surface during cutting, welding, and storage. Tools used on carbon steel should not contaminate stainless steel parts because transferred iron particles may later create rust marks.

After welding, suitable cleaning and finishing were required to restore the appearance and corrosion performance around the welded areas.

Project Results

The coordinated material plan addressed both technical and visual requirements. Instead of treating the order as a standard tube purchase, the project linked grade selection, dimensions, finish, fabrication, inspection, and transport protection.

The supply solution offered several benefits:

  • Material selected for coastal exposure
  • Stable dimensions for prefabricated assemblies
  • Consistent surfaces for visible components
  • Clear identification of each tube specification
  • Reduced risk of transport scratches
  • Easier receiving and warehouse sorting
  • A repeatable specification for future project stages

This approach helped the customer manage the stainless steel tubes as part of a complete fabrication project.
